Unfulfilled Expectations Were Crucial In Causing The Revolution. They Were Also The Key Causes Of The Crisis In The New Revolutionary Regime’.
There were many reasons for causing the 1789 Revolution in France, and one was the unfulfilled expectations of the people. The old regime was extremely rigid in its ways of running things, and the people of France wanted a say. Although the new regime was much more democratic, as it was no longer a monarchical state, there were still crisis, but they were not specifically due to unfulfilled expectations, they were caused by other reasons. The people of France expected things to change in the new regime and most historians can agree that the revolution profoundly altered most aspects of life in France. When they were given a chance to have a say in the government with the Elections to the Estates General in 1989, their expectations were high for change. France was practically bankrupt after their help with the War of American Independence, and the taxation system was a mess with the burdens heavily on the shoulders of the third estate. Louis XVI had to resort to holding the Assembly of Notables to raise some money, but this resulted in the Elections to the Estates General, as the first estate was not willing to be taxed. Louis gave the people over a year to write their cahiers for the Estates General. This rose their expectatio

The peoples expectations were unfulfilled and this was one of the key causes of the revolution. If there had not been such a financial crisis then Louis would not have had to resort to the Estates General, and if the Louis had no had so much trouble governing then he wouldn’t have had to resort to the Assembly of Notables, which had not been seen since 1624. During the creation of the new revolutionary regime the people of France found that they had many crisis to overcome. “The Declaration of rights of man and citizen” was too idealistic as their expectations were far too high. They wanted men to “remain free and equal in rights” but this is extremely unrealistic, and is in deep contrast to the way things had been in the old Regime. The church was very powerful and they the revolutionaries took a lot of their land and money away. This created division among the people which had to be dealt with. There was also the challenge of the economy, as France was still in great debt and the new assignats had inflated. To deal with some of the problems in the new revolutionary regime they created the terror in 1793, with the Law of Suspects. The Terror solved a lot of the key causes of the crisis, but at the same time crushed the people expectations that the government would act in democratic manner. W Doyle thou
