Biligualism

The growth in international adoption and immigration has spurred a variety of communication challenges and concerns regarding bilingualism and learning English as a second language in young children. Parents are often concerned about the impact of bilingualism on overall language development and academic success, as well as finding strategies for promoting early bilingualism.

In 1997, The National Clearinghouse for Bilingual Education reported their findings from a study on Parent Characteristics: Influence in the Development of Bilingualism in Young Children. The study demonstrated that parents of young bilinguals could promote their own bilingualism while developing bilingualism in their children.

However, the study also illustrates the potential loss of the native language other than English by both the bilingual children and the parents striving to develop two langu


The investigation’s results showed that U.S. born bilinguals whose first language is one other than English, and bilinguals, whose first language is English, as well as non-U.S. born bilinguals, are not negatively impacted by their early bilingualism. To the contrary, all groups exhibited a high level of educational and professional attainment.

The method used to conduct this study involved four parts during which graduate students from the University of Buffalo were trained to formulate the research questions, more than 81 linguistic minority parents and primary care givers who were interviewed by the research team, the collected data was analyzed, and the final review of the aforementioned data.
