Legalizing Marijuana
Marijuana, pot, hemp, grass, reefer, Mary Jane, cannabis, the controversy that surrounds this little five to seven leafed plant has escalated into an enormous debate throughout the United States. Throughout this paper, one discusses the positive and negative affects the legalization of marijuana has on the American society. Controversial issues include wide spread drug use, drug money and other uses for the cannabis plant, medicinal uses of marijuana, the infringement prohibition has on civil liberties, and damaging and positive effects it holds on our society. Studies in many different areas show that decriminalization of marijuana ceases to increase consumption. In the 1970’s about twelve states decriminalize marijuana and consumption fails to increase. The Netherlands government tolerates the cultivation, sale, and possession of small amounts of marijuana. (8) Consumption actually decreases after decriminalization in the Netherlands. When researching this topic, one finds that marijuana is minimally harmful and possesses many uses other than “getting high.” If legalization occurs, the government could take charge of distribution, not only creating jobs, but also accumulating money for education. Legalization causes distributors to market to children, making anti-drug education almost impossible. Even if cannabis distribution takes place under license and strictly to adults, there would still be a healthy black market. Legalization only changes the supplier and increases the amount of potential users. (1) Violent crime connects itself with illegal drug use. People who abuse drugs do not perform their jobs properly which cost employers money. The drug frenzy imposes a serious threat on the civil liberties of American citizens. Legalization presents the recognition of the rights of adult Americans to make their own choice without having fear of criminal prosecution. (3) People take part in dangerous activities, such as skydiving, in which many people die from every year, yet it is legal. (2) Current drug laws completely contradict the principles of a free society. Drug violators do no harm to anyone but themselves, and sometimes they do little or no harm even to themselves.
