Vera Institute
The Vera Institute of Justice deals with many issues in the world such as policing, corrections, sentencing, and much more. The one that I found most interesting was the Institutions for Youth. Vera is a non-profit organization that sponsors criminal justice programs. It is trying to propose new ways to help today’s youth. For example, instead of always focusing on what they do wrong, we should support the students into wanting to make better choices for themselves. The Adolescent Portable Therapy (APT) is a new treatment program for young offenders with drug habits. APT works with kids inside New York City detention centers and upstate institutions, and then continues treating them in their home communities. This is a way that they can keep close ties with the community instead of being thrown out into another family and community. When foster children get arrested, who shows up for them? Well, it is the job of the child’s welfare system to help them but police usually do not know that the child is in foster care and therefore, do not know who to call. In the year of 2002, Vera established the National Associates Program on Youth Justice. This program helps the youth into not getting themselves into a troubled path. This Youth Justice Program helps officials in solving the problems of the youth by helping them use their resources more efficiently. Teachers and safety officials are in a little problem of their own. Teachers want more help in the classroom with behavior while officials are concerned more with having them enforce the rules. Vera has been working with the NYC Board of Education and the police to help increase communication between these two groups. They form neighborhood school safety clusters made up of teachers, officers, and the community to discuss school safety and different incidents that have occurred in the schooling system so we can better these situations. Schools are another factor that Vera thinks we should concentrate on. Our schools are beginning to not feel as safe as students would like. Therefore, there are many police officers who work inside schools monitoring entrances, patrolling hallways, and making sure students do not violate the rules. These police officers should have a way to better their involvement with the school system as well as the students. Vera is developing a training program to show the police officers when to use force and aggression but in the least amount. The officers will go into classrooms to try to understand how to become skilled in positive behaviors and how to change problem behaviors. Then, they are helped by fie
