The Presidents had a big role in the Vietnam War. To problems at home to problems on the battlefield, it had to be a long, devastating four years in office for each president. Harry S. Truman was one of the first presidents to assist in the war (“Vietnam War”). The Truman administration believed that the United States and its allies must meet any sign of communist aggression quickly and forcefully. Any communist anywhere, at home, or abroad, was by definition, an enemy of the United States (“Vietnam War”). Truman was the first president to enter the war, and if you want to blame the entering of U.S. troops in Vietnam on him, go right ahead. He was near the end of his term when the war started and the next president into office was Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower enunciated the ‘domino theory’ which said that, if any communists succeeded in controlling Vietnam, they would progressively dominate all of Southeast Asia, the United States worst fear. That is why U.S. got involved because we feared communist takeover (“Vietnam War”). Eisenhower was also one of those ‘quiet presidents’, but when John F. Kennedy came into office, all hell broke lose. When President Kennedy took office in January of 1961, there were only 900 official U.S. Military Advisors in South Vietnam. By the end of 1962, the figure had reached eleven thousand (Barr 20-21). Whether these gruesome developments would have led Kennedy to redirect or decrease U.S. involvement in Vietnam is unknown, since Kennedy was assassinated three weeks later (“Vietnam War”). In the hours immediately following Kennedy’s death, Johnson wondered if Kennedy had been killed in retaliation for U.S. support of the coup against Diem, no evidence was ever found (Barr 23).
