Cholesterol

A certain amount of cholesterol is essential to health, but too much can contribute to disease, heart attacks, and strokes (Jacoby, 310).

Cholesterol is a soft, waxy, substance found among the lipids (fats) in the bloodstream (About Cholesterol). It is used to help digest fats (Cholesterol).

There are two types of cholesterol. The first one is Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL) and High Density Lipoproteins (HDL) (Cholesterol). LDL cholesterol, also known as the “bad” cholesterol, builds up and clots bloodstream in the walls of your arteries (Cholesterol). HDL cholesterol, or the “good” cholesterol, removes LDL cholesterol to the liver where it is metabolized (Cholesterol).

Another cause is a combination of diet and genetic foods (High Cholesterol…). Inactive lifestyle, gaining a lot of weight, and a high fat diet are some other causes to look out for (High Cholesterol…). Type II A Hyperlipidemia is characterized by elevations of only LDL cholesterol (Cholesterol and…). Type II B Hyperlipidemia is characterized by elevation of both LDL cholesterol and triglycerides (Cholesterol and…). Type III Hyperlipidemia develops due to a deficit in VLDC remnant clearance (Cholesterol and…). Type IV Hyperlipidemia has triglycerides levels generally between 250 and 500 mg/dL (Cholesterol and…). Type V Hyperlipidemia has elevated levels of Chylomicrons and VLDL (Cholesterol and…).

The first step in athengenisis is the entrance and trapping of LDL in the blood vessel (Cholesterol and…). Athengenisis ground substances like the glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) have a high similarity for the apo B-100 of the LDL (Cholesterol and…). Other particles containing apo B-100 are, for example, VLDL remnants (IDL) are probably atherogenic as well (Cholesterol and…).

Some people think if their cholesterol is normal, they don’t have a chance at getting a stroke or heart attack (High Cholesterol…). But, even if you have good cholesterol, you are still able to get a stroke or heart attack (High Cholesterol…). So if your thinking about getting your cholesterol checked, it would be good to get it checked about every 5 years (High Cholesterol…). Although, it depends what group you are.
