Walden An Social Conformity

The essay Walden, by Henry D. Thoreau demonstrates one mans feelings towards social norms and what is accepted in our society. Walden is about a man, Thoreau, living in the woods for two years and writing about his experiences there and his personal feelings towards, what many believe to be the foundations of our society. Although Thoreau attended the prestigious Harvard, he never took on a steady career as many said he should, and eventually even criticized the thought of education. He firmly believed in “Learning and living through experience.” (Thoreau 34) Thoreau was and still is widely known for his resistance to and challenging behavior to socially accepted behaviors. Although circumstances have changed dramatically over the last one hundred and fifty years, the issue of humanities social expectations and conformity still plagues our everyday lives.

The conformity of our appearance is still as prominent in our society as it was one hundred and fifty years ago when Thoreau addressed it.
