To say that the film American History X depicts those of different races to be on bad terms with each other would be quite an understatement. Through characters’ conversations and numerous acts of violence, Kaye conveys this premise of hostilities. Hate of those who are different than they drive the protagonists to violence. The protagonists, neo-Nazi skinheads, go to far extents to show their abhorrence towards people of other races.

At times, neo-Nazi members do not need to be around their enemies to show their detestation of them. At one point in American History X, Seth and Danny, two skinheads, have a conversation that consists of the following:

In this film, whenever a cop decides to start something with a local, everyone comes running to back their fellow resident. This drive to violence is brought about from what has happened in the past. Hubert, Sayid, and Vinz have all seen what the police have done to other people. Not only do they want to stick up for themselves, they want to get the police back for everyone else.

Seth: None of ‘em are fucking alright, Danny, OK?

This pep talk of such intense emotion got the group ready to go in the store and brutally attack workers and shoppers.

One other scene that sticks out in mind takes place in the men’s bathroom. After Hubert, Sayid, and Vinz have a private conversation, an old man appears to share his story:

The purpose of this scene is to signify the concept of never letting go of your dream. In the films case, Hubert can be related to the character in the old man’s story. If the man keeps stopping to pick up his pants, he will never reach the train and continue on his journey. Likewise, if Hubert keeps getting involved with his friends and the police force, he will never continue on and reach his dream of a better life.
