It's a Friday night, close to 7:00 p.m., and I'm hanging out with my friends in line for the year's big summer movie, "The Matrix Reloaded," a very violent rated-R movie. We were all excited to see this movie, and as we waited in line we had to share our excitement by talking about the film. As we were standing in line and talking, a short boy with a mean smirk on his face practically collided into me while seemingly looking at me. He had spilled some of his soda on my pants, and he acted like he was mad at me. I apologized, even though it was obviously his fault, simply because I was raised that way. A few minutes the later the movie was starting and I felt hardly any anger towards the person.

Later that night, I was driving my friends home. We all love loud, rock music, some of which could be considered offensive and violent. We ended up getting in an argument about one of our favorite bands, "Metallica," and it was obvious that a fight was in order. Usually, when we get in these heated arguments about which CD was better, we settle them with big fights, and we usually fight in the same method. The method of which I am speaking is "Halo."

But that's the way it goes. It's the way our world goes round and round. We live in a society of individuals. We live in a society of finger-pointers and finger-waggers. We live in a world of selfishness and greed. We live in a world of money. For what it's worth, we could get rid of all violent media and all violent things from our world, period. The only problem is that we would then have a world without people.

I feel as if people far too often mistaken violent media for the cause of violent acts. It really started with the Columbine incident, and since then all violent media has been scrutinized under a microscope. Many organizations and groups have lashed out against the media in our society and the violence it contains. They attack this media assuming it is the reason they lost their sons and daughters in a school shooting, suicide, or other violent act. I believe that rarily do children commit these acts simply because they watched a violent TV show once a week, or played a violent videogame 3 hours a day. At some point, the parents need to take responsibility, they did raise the children after all, or at least we could assume that they did.

videogames. A game in which the object is to chase each other around and blow each other up, frankly speaking. We're put in a large or small arena and see who can kill each other the most to score the most points. We all find it very fun, and settle many differences this way. We have never felt the urge to find a machine gun and destroy one another. If we ever did, then we would settle it in the realm of a violent game.

The kids happened to play video games, listen to music, and watch movies, and they happened to use guns. To say that violent media is responsible for the shootings is like saying that Hitler was German, and therefore Europe is responsible for the murder of countless Jews. How one can make the leap from one to the other, I cannot even begin to understand. The only thing this lawsuit does is possibly hurt the video game industry by sapping money from the major companies. The saddest part of this is that it is the only thing the lawsuit could possibly do. In the end, nothing will have been learned.

I find it heartbreaking that the parents would seek to cheapen the memory of their lost children by turning to greed and selfishness. From all of the evidence discovered, the videos and diaries, it was clear that these teenagers were lonely, they were depressed, and they were very, very angry.
