Nathaniel White was a man who went on a year-long killing spree after allegedly being inspired by the numerous Robocop movies. It all started on March 25, 1991, when Juliana Frank was found brutally stabbed and her body dumped on abandoned railroad tracks in Middletown. Then in the month of July, Laurette Huggins Reviere was also found stabbed to death in her Middletown apartment. Less than three weeks later Adriane Marcette Hunter was found dead behind an old abandoned diner in Goshen. Brenda L. Whiteside of Elmsford, her cousin Angela Hopkins of Poughkeepsie, and Christine M. Klebbe, of Goshen were also all reported missing that same month. Their bodies were found shortly after. The killing spree allegedly began almost immediately after he saw the futuristic horror movie Robocop. (“Stakeout” ).

Not being able to take responsibility and throwing the blame on someone else is what some believe is the reason that there is such controversy with violence in the movies. In “Games of a Scapegoat,” Steve Bauman argues that, “it is the media’s need for a scapegoat and for easy answers that makes video games, movies, and music easy targets” (Kirzner and Mandell 565). Although this statement makes a rather convincing point, it too lacks validity. We as the public are not trying blame the media simply because its the easiest thing to do, but because we believe that the violence in the movies we watch have an effect on some people. Innocent people are robbed, hurt, and even murdered by people who are desensitized and inspired by extremely violent films. It is not in the slightest bit that the media is being used as a scapegoat for the problems that exist in our society. We are merely realizing the problem and targeting it. Violent crime scenes and murder scenes are unacceptable and not intended to be emulated in real life.

Children exposed to violent movies are especially at risk of being influenced negatively. The more that children watch violent movies, the more they will be used to violence as they grow up. They will grow to accept it, and think that violence is the correct way to solve problems. Also, when violence in movies is seen as justified, such as when the hero slays the evil villain, aggressive and even destructive behavior is encouraged.
