Over the past two years, there have been numerous conservative groups and parent organizations that have attempted to ban the production of violent video games. These groups believe that violent video games are detrimental to a child’s mental health, and that they cause children to manifest violent behavior. However, I do not agree with the theory that violent video games cause children to become violent, and I do not feel that violent video games should be banned. Violent video games are said to supposedly make children manifest more violent and aggressive behavior. However, I feel that this belief is used as a scapegoat for the increase in adolescent violence, and that the media has wrongly portrayed video games as a catalyst for violence in
children. I have been playing violent, and non-violent video games since I was approximately six years old, and these games have not had a negative effect on me. I believe that video games have actually allowed me to become a less violent and less aggressive person. When I play video games, I am able to release my pent-up feelings of anger and aggression, yet at the same time not detrimentally affect anyone in the real world. In my opinion, video games are intended to be an entertaining release from the real world; they are designed to allow us to perform acts that are not acceptable in our society.
