Virtual Public And Or Virtual Charter Schools

Virtual Public and/or Virtual Charter Schools

For many years parents, teachers and the government have searched for different techniques to improve education. One contemporary method is the virtual classroom, which has actually been used as a supplement to the home-school method for a number of years. The virtual classroom attracts parents who are not content with public schools, it is a way of upgrading the home-schooling method. It benefits children who have failed a class and need to make up the credit, who want to take a class that their school does not offer, and those who wants to earn extra credit and graduate early. It also benefits parents who either cannot afford to buy home education materials, or does not feel confident in their ability to home educate without help. The program includes children who are either homebound because of illness or are unable to attend a school because of behavior, attendance problems, or simply parents who want to home-school their children. Some programs, such as the Western Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School, offers two certified professionals for every 50 students, and offers a computer and printer for at-home use. Virtual schools provides a

This position paper will address the conflict theory and the distribution of power and privilege by both the parents, government and school districts. It will also approach conflicts and the value of a parents educational choice.

Students in the virtual classroom are also offered many advantages that home schooled children may miss out on. They also feature yearbooks, newspapers, student showcase, and a student and faculty lounge (education-world.com). Students will also be required to take the same state proficiency tests that the public school students are currently taking, because they are public school students. These tests are important because they assess the child's attitudes and world view as well as skills and abilities (cheohome.org).

The current programs offer many benefits to both the parents and students. Free computers, printers, scanners internet access with dedicated phone lines and software is offered to the families participating. Under some state formulas, school districts pay tuition's for each students who attends the virtual charter school (post-gazette.com). This can benefit parents who want to home school their children but may not be able to afford to buy home education materials. It also allows parents who are not secure in their teaching abilities to become mentors in their children's education. These programs are overseen by professional teachers, all students will be under the oversight of the public schools, and their curriculum. Parents have a relationship with the teacher, "Parents are our partners, teachers speak to them (on the phone) at least once a month" says Julie E. Young, Florida High School principal (education-world.com).

Distance education is enabling school districts to offer a variety of advanced courses that may not be available in our public schools. This can benefit students our AP students, both being home schooled and also who are looking to graduate from High School early. Some Virtual High School's can offer up to 150 classes.
