War

War is a very controversial circumstance. I am not sure that there is an appropriate time for war although I do believe it is necessary to do what needs to be done. I also believe that when war is in consideration, it is definitely low in the rankings in ways to solve confrontations. Determining the magnitude of the problem before war has to be brought into play can be very hard and debatable. “Just War – or a Just War?” by Jimmy Carter, and “Peace Isn’t Possible in Evil’s Face by Elie Wiesel are some very good articles on pages 259-63 in the book The Presence of Others, that expand on war as well as the pros and cons as a result of going to war.

Jimmy Carter (Carter) believes that war is only necessary if there is no other solution. Elie Wiesel (Wiesel) does not believe in war as well but thinks that if there is a just cause like in Iraq, action has to be taken. (pp. 259) I believe war should only be considered as a last resort, but I also believe that if you want something done than you have to do it yourself. The longer you procrastinate war, not only does the situation become more serious than it already is, but winning the war does not get any easier. The decision has to be made sooner than later,

especially when dealing with mass destruction. What happens when you wait to long to decide and it’s too late because some of the weapons have started being used.

War is not the answer for every little thing that comes along obviously, but there comes a time when you are obligated to do what needs to be done, even if that means physical confrontation. Carter is against war at all costs and that might be the best solution in most cases. (pp. 260) But what if? There is always a “what if” in every situation and you need to keep that idea in the back of your mind at all times. I don’t believe there are many people that want our country to go to war, but just about everyone wants the problems to be solved with the least amount of destruction and fatality. I am on the same page as Wiesel in the sense that I don’t think that war is always the answer, but if it is the only way to get some cooperation then honestly what else is there to do.

You also have to keep in mind when you are going to war all the people that are going to die because of what has happened. But would you rather have thousands of people die because they are fighting for there country, or would you rather have thousands of people die because of a terrorist attack that could hav
