Why Robert E. Lee Became the Symbol of the South

During the 19th century, Robert E. Lee, through strategic brilliance and inspired leadership, turned the Confederate States of America from a defenseless military nation into a viable threat to the Union. Lee represented the South admirably with his innovations in maneuver and military defense, which allowed him to gain victory consistently against superior forces. His distinctive leadership earned Lee loyalty and affection from his soldiers and Southern compatriots. A great general and a great man, Robert E. Lee was an American hero as well as a fitting symbol of the South.

Lee’s devotion and loyalty to his native state of Virginia, which caused him to side with the Confederacy, made him a symbol of the South. A perfect example of this faithfulness occurred during the onset of the Civil War. On


Many historians consider Robert E. Lee the greatest general of the Civil War, and it is generally agreed that his military genius was a principal factor in keeping the Confederacy alive. Even though the Confederacy lost the war, Lee’s courage in fighting the Union with a lack of men and artillery made him an American hero. Today, Lee remains a military hero respected and studied for his strategic skills in fighting a larger, better supplied army and his leadership abilities in gaining the respect and adoration of his subordinates.

Robert E. Lee’s closeness to his family also served as a representation of the South. Though in public he was calm and undemonstrative, in private he revealed a warm, sentimental side to his family.
