In the beginning of the novel, Huck is wild and carefree, playing jokes and tricks on people and believing them all to be very funny. Moreover Huck is under the care of Widow Douglas. “She took me for her son, and allowed she would sivilize me; but it was rough living in the house all the time; and so when I couldn’t stand it no longer, I let out (9). This statement shows that Huck is used to being free and finds Widow Douglas’s protection unacceptable. Huck feels that he belongs out under the stars and in nature. When the King and the Duke sold Jim, Huck felt pretty bad and when out to find Jim. Then I set down and cried; I couldn’t help it. But I couldn’t set still long (225). This shows that Huck is caring over he friend and that he sticks by his morals as much as he can, and Huck morals have changed a lot. He felt that by helping Jim he was committing a sin. Without knowing what to do he then decided to pray, but words wouldn’t come out. I knowed very well why they wouldn’t come. It was because my heart wasn’t right; it was because I warn’t square; it was because I was playing double. I was letting on to give up sin, but away inside of me I was holding on the biggest one of all. But deep down inside me I knowed it was a lie. You can’t pray a lie. (227). Huck saying this shows that he feels what he has done for Jim is not wrong; instead what others had done to Jim is wrong. Then he decided to write a letter to Miss Watson, a letter that could get Jim into more trouble and then he said, “I’ll go to hell”-and tore it up (228). Huck decided that his friendship was more important to him. Huck begins to realize that Jim has done nothing but good to him.

During this stage of Huck life, he fights with himself of whether he should turn Jim to the authorities or not. Still not sure what to do about the whole situation Huck feels bad because he says Miss Watson never did anything to him that she deserved her slave being taken away. Conscience says to me, “What had poor Miss Watson done to you, that you could see her nigger go off right under your eyes and never say one single word? What did that poor old woman do to you, that you could treat her so mean. I got to feeling so mean and so miserable I most wished I was dead (100). Huck made the decision of turning Jim, but as the story goes on we see how Huck’s attitude change toward Jim and how he saves Jim from two slave catchers by tricking them to think that Jim is Huck’s father and that he had Smallpox.
