Death rates for some of the more common cancers, like stomach cancer, lung cancer in white, middle-aged men and colorectal cancer, have declined. But with the exception of colorectal cancer, the declines may not be the result of advances in treatment but are possibly largely due to changes in lifestyle, diet and public hygiene. Researchers isolate a gene that predisposes people to various cancers. Unlike other cancer genes, the mutated form of the ataxia- telangiectasia (ATM) gene is relatively common in the population, suggesting it may be a significant cause of many cancers.
