Slobodan Milosevic

During the morning on the first day in April in 2001, “The Butcher of the Balkans”, Slobodan Milosevic, was arrested at his house, in Belgrade, on international charges of abuse of power, corruption, war crimes, crimes against humanity, deportation, and genocide. On June 28, the Serbian government, who arrested Milosevic, gave him to the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. Although the Serbian Government felt Milosevic should be tried at home, they were desperate for the financial aid given to them by the United States to rebuild their economy. The United States blackmailed the Serbian Government by playing on their need for this money and threatening to take all financial aid away. Milosevic’s trial on the charges of war crimes and other crimes which were previously mentioned, began at The Hague on February 12, 2002. Many different people have contrasting opinions on whether or not this, “Architect of the Bloodshed” should be tried for the crimes against him by an international judiciary force.

Milosevic holds responsibility for one of the greatest genocide monstrosities of the late twentieth century. He knowing ordered the “massacre of unarmed men, the rape of defenseless women, and the violent ethnic cleansing of a whole people.” It is imperative Milosevic is tried for the war crimes and crimes against humanity which he committed because allowing him to escape will give him another opportunity to instill havoc upon Europe and the World. Milosevic is currently accused of sixty-six counts of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. The Bosnia Indictment is the only indictment which carries a genocide charge along with it. Genocide is the systematic and planned elimination of a national or ethnic group. There are twenty-nine counts of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes against Milosevic from the Bosnian War. One of these two counts is genocide and the other is “complicity in genocide“. The genocide charge is because Bosnian Serbs killed thousands of Bosnian Muslims and Bosnian Croats in an attempt to create an ethnically pure culture. The crimes the Bosnian Serbs committed which were constituted as genocide included murder, torture, rape, and other inhumane acts. Milosevic is not only guilty for individual responsibility in the genocide, but since he organized and supported the genocide, he is guilty of superior responsibility. He had a goal of eliminating the majority, if not all, of Muslims and Croats in the region and he should be proven guilty for all charges against him.

f Serbia by the national assembly in May 1989. The following thirteen years of his reign would eventually lead to his downfall and arrest. The trouble began when nationalism began to grow in Yugoslavia’s republics, which occurred after communist governments throughout Eastern Europe disbanded. The feeling of nationalism led to the republics of Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina removing themselves from the federation. The problem from this separation was generated by the large Serbian populati
