You begin to experience mild headache, your muscles and joints are sore, and a red bumpy rash seems to have developed on your skin. You ask yourself, what is wrong with me? The answer, you might just be one of the 854 people to be infected with the West Nile Virus. “To date the CDC (Center for Disease Control) has reported 854 cases in people from 28 states, the District of Columbia, and New York City. Forty-three people have died from this virus, which is about 10% of all cases”(CDC Mortality Report, 2001). What is the West Nile Virus? How can it be stopped? Where did the virus come from? My interest in this topic is to find answers to these questions. Mosquitoes are the main carriers of the West Nile Virus. When a mosquito bites and extracts out the blood of an animal or human it introduces the West Nile virus, the virus enters the victim’s body and invades the cells. The virus then steals the genetic material within a cell to create new copies of West Nile virus. These newly created viruses then leave the cell, destroy the cell and then move on to other cells repeating the same process.
