SIMBA: A Program Evaluation

In an effort to improve the quality of services for the Safe in My Brother’s Arms community outreach program, there will be an evaluation that measures the effectiveness of the programs in the agency. This evaluation will be used as an instrument to exhibit the necessity of the program to the community. The evaluation will also be utilized as a tool to attract and keep funders for the program. The evaluation will be outcomes-based and will examine the progress of potential, current, and past members of the program over a period of time.

The SIMBA assumptions about the program’s potential effectiveness rely on a combination of the experience and data gathered by the founders of the program. The founders researched the crime rate in the Orange County area and found that a large portion of our youth population has been, are, or will be involved in criminal activities during their teen years. An assumption is that teens that become criminals are more likely to become career criminals as opposed to teens that don’t commit crimes. It is also assumed that many criminals commit crimes in order to gain financial stability. The founders also interviewed criminal offenders and found that a primary

An indicator of a decrease in total community crime is statistical data that can be obtained from city hall. This can be researched by the mentors of the program. Data should be gathered from a point in time where the program did not exist and should be compared to the data gathered proceeding the commencement of the program (minimum of five year gap between comparison points).

These mentors will supervise all activities that are administered by the program. The second implementation objective is to create meaningful activities for the program’s participants. In order to keep the attention of the youth, the foundation of the program will be recreation based. There will be tournaments in a varying number of sports. Other activities will consist of educational workshops and outings. The final implementation objective is to obtain a recreation building. Due to the program‘s attempt to remain attractive to potential participants, recreation must lie at core. Since most of the program’s activities will be recreation based, this building is the greatest asset to the program.

There are also intermediate outcomes. The first intermediate outcome is the increase of academic achievement. With the acquisition of knowledge, the participants will feel more confident in the classroom and therefore perform better. The other intermediate outcome is the building of self-esteem. The participants are being presented with so much knowledge (academic, health, social, etc.) and are assured that they have the full support of each mentor. This foundation will build self-esteem in the participants.

The preceding plan for evaluation should insure a thorough assessment of the expected outcomes for the Safe In My Brother’s Arms program. The evaluating techniques were designed to be cost effective since the program is a non-profit organization. The only part that would have been c
