Throughout the novel Rebecca written by Daphne DuMaurier the narrator experiences many doubt and uncertainties. These doubts are caused by her marriage to Maxim de Winter, who has chosen her as his second wife. She must take on many roles as the wife of Mr. De Winter, which causes her to try and compete against his first wife, Rebecca, who is only a spirit now in their life. She comes into this marriage from a very different perspective of life. Rebecca becomes such a powerful name in this story that it seems as though she is this great woman and threatens the marriage of Maxim and his new bride. The narrator is in fear of losing her identity thus symbolizing why throughout this novel you never learn her real nor family name.
