Pilates

Joseph Hubertus Pilates is the founder of the Pilates method also known as “the method.” He was born in Germany in 1880 and as a young boy suffered from asthma, ricketts and rheumatic fever. He was always very weak. Fortunately, a family physician gave him a used anatomy book which he proceeded to memorize. He said, “ I learned every page, every part of the body; I would move each part as I memorized it. “ He studied both Eastern and Western forms of exercise including yoga, Zen, and ancient Greek and Roman regimens. By the time he was 14 he had worked so hard to improve his body that he had become body model for anatomy charts. During WWI, he taught wrestling and self-defense. He began to create his system that would become Contology. He was transferred to a camp where he worked as a nurse. He developed equipment to rehabilitate wartime wounded, he even worked on an apparatus to help exercise the bedridden. Pilates technique was so successful that when the influenza swept over the country, none of his patients perished. Denise Austin video: This is another pilates video by Denise Austin. She has made many famous workout videos throughout the years that range from aerobics to workouts for pregnant women. This video was kind of her way of jumping onto the pilates band wagon. The video is separated into two twenty minute workouts that can be rotated every day.

Winsor Video: This video is by Mari Winsor. She is the new age guru of Pilates. She is responsible for making it the craze that it is today. She took Joseph Pilates method and tweeked it to what she calls Winsor Pilates. She brought it to Hollywood and has many famous clients who swear by her workout. Her winsor pilates seems to be some kind of phenomenon that started in Hollywood and has spread from Hollywood to all over the world. Many of Hollywood’s elite use this workout to produce the long lean bodies that they need to be in movies.

Pilates, a series of highly choreographed exercises designed to strengthen your muscles, particularly in your back and abdominal areas, and done in small classes. Pilates helps movie stars maintain optimum shape. Pilates integrates body and mind. In Pilates, it is more important to execute a few repetitions of an exercise correctly versus numerous, mindless repetitions. The result is longer, leaner muscles, clarity of mind, and a feeling of refreshment after class. Pilates incorporates elements of Yoga, swimming, Greco Roman exercise, breathing techniques, boxing, rowing, dancing and gymnastics. Pilates is also called the Physical Mind Method and is is a series of non-impact exercises designed by Joseph Pilates to develop strength, flexibility, balance, and inner awareness.
