You don’t tend to see many white- collar crimes on the news or in the newspapers because the news wants to only cover “interesting” violent crimes to keep the ratings up but white- collar crimes are just as serious. Fraud and pollution tend not to be as interesting and appalling as someone getting gunned down on the street. White- collar crimes are less heard of but not less serious than street crimes. In fact, in 1975, a doctor testified “there were 3.2 million cases of unnecessary surgery performed each year in the United States” and the unneeded operations cost “close to five billion dollars a year and kill as many as 16,000 Americans” (Taking Sides; Clashing Views on Controversial Issues in Crime and Criminology, by Richard C. Monk, pg. 77) White- collar crimes also tend to be covered up more than street crimes. It is statistically proven that the majority of white- collar criminals are upper class people that can afford to keep their crimes under wrap. Also, these types of crimes are more likely to be kept hidden from authorities than a shooting or a rape. We report only what others have studied and white- collar crime is just now starting to emerge as a subject that needs studying, the information on it is limited and just because we do not hear about white- collar crime does not mean they do not happen and that they are not important or serious.
