The Crisis of the Later Middle Ages

Economic difficulties in the later middle ages ranged from price inflation, sever weather, and poor harvests which all led to scarcity and starvation.

Reduced caloric intake led to increased susceptibility to disease, and less energy, which in turn led to higher grain prices.

Just as western Europe had begun to recover from the famine, an epidemic of typhoid fever killed thousands, then in 1318, disease hit cattle and sheep, then in 1321, another bad harvest.

The province of Languedoc is an example of the crisis of the later middle ages, it underwent four years of bad harvests, then torrential rains, then twenty poor harvests in fifty years, then the black death came.

Poor harvests led to the abandonment of (sometimes) entire towns, this led to an increased number of vagabonds; this all led to a volatile land market. A large percentage of unemployment encouraged people to turn to crime.

The French government took harsh measures, which had little positive outcome. Popular discontent and paranoia increased, the Jews were targeted and killed, tortured, beaten, or hit with heavy fines.

Most aspects of society and success depended on racial purity. This was especially apparent in Ireland, where legislatures were passed saying that there shall be no marriages between migrant and native stock, and on how English people can dress.

In 1984, two scientists independently identified the bacteria that causes the plague. The bacteria was carried in the stomach of a flea, later to be hosted by a rat. Rats often traveled in ships, making it easy for the disease to spread.
