What Is Pleasure Anyway?

We often hold an improper insight on pleasure and which are deemed more pleasurable than others. Pleasure can come in many different forms than just belongings and wealth. For society teaches us what is more pleasing and distorts our judgment of what pleasure truly is. Our pleasures and the pain that they bring must be calculated in order to gain the most satisfaction with the least amount of pain. Morals are what must be used in order to be able to make good judgments of what pleasure is. In the end what must be realized is the pleasures we need, the ones we do not, and the best ones to be chosen are the natural and intellectual ones.

Materials are not only the only way one may go about pleasing themselves as the pleasure of another person may bring happiness which leads to pleasure. It is thought that in order to be happy one must have things that please them, which is a great mistake in the search for happiness. One could make a sacrifice in order to please another person, or persons, which ultimately pleases oneself. For example, a mother and father who are willing to give up their time, a portion of food & income for their child would be pleasing themselves by pleasing their child. It is sometimes sacrifices’ that

Our feelings can affect our judgment of good, since our choices are based on pleasure they affect our morals and our judgment. Our morals and virtues are connected to our pleasure (Epicurus Exerts, p.13) and when something is done that we fell we have done right pleasure is brought out of it. When a person considers another person’s feelings over their own is a value that was learned in their morals when they were young. For example people that have children place their pleasure on the happiness of their child. From this the child is learning the pleasure of pleasing others and that it is good. Epicurus entwines the idea that pleasure is connected to our judgment of everything that is “good”. He began by talking about pleasure and how it is the first thing that we learn (Epicurus Exerts, p.13). He then says that we consider the amount of pleasure something will bring us before we make our decisions about things (Epicurus Exerts, p.18). This brings in the idea of how pleasure is a feeling and that we make feelings our basis for determining if something is good. From all these feelings and judgments we are given our morals. So what must be used to make our decision on what we need that will bring pleasure, be it for necessary and unnecessary desires, is the use of our good morals in making our decision . As totally simple desires can bring the pleasure of another desire (Epicurus Exerts, p.13). An example of this is water compared to champagne, both can quench thirst but champagne would be more desired to have. This so because it would show that one has money and that with money we can buy top quality products that will supposedly bring us more pleasure and a sense of happiness. Seen hear is how our morals are being overridden by our greed, that ingratitude of the soul makes a person greedy (Epicurus Exerts, p.17). We cannot allow ourselves to be controlled by passion and lust as Epicurus taught to simplify yourself to the lowest state and to be rational about your wants/pleasures (Epicurus Exerts, p.13). The Epicurean enjoys living a life of pleasure through the self-control of desire. Not to seek what is inappropriate for us, but to enjoy survival and basic needs.

Epicurus believed that we should take the simple pleasures as they are easier to acquir
