What Is Unique About Human Reality

When first confronted with this question I thought that the thing that made human reality unique was that it was always changing. I also stated that reality has the tendency to change based on individual and cultural environments. In this paper I will attempt to further explain my statements by taking a look at how different perspectives and social environments make human reality unique. I will then close by looking at the importance of the symbol and how it helps to create the uniqueness in human reality.

Growing up in Philadelphia I always thought that everything around me was the same for everyone throughout Philadelphia. I thought that the reality I shared growing up in Philadelphia was the similar for everyone growing up in Philadelphia. Everyone who lived in my neighborhood basically lived in homes that were all alike on the outside. There was no one of a different race that lived in my area so I was basically surrounded by the same thing. Basically we all shared the same reality. This shared reality revolved around the same part of North Philadelphia in which we all grew up. I never really thought of anything outside of the box. It seemed that stepping out the realm of

This leads me into my first topic, which would be perspectives. According, to Joel M. Charon, “perspectives are made up of words; and it is these words that are used by the observer to make sense out of situations”(Charon p.4). Anyone from a suburban or rich neighborhood would look at my area in which I grew up and use words such as poverty, crime, drugs, and unemployment. This to an outside observer helps them to understand or helps them to validate there meaning that they have placed on this area. This would be that observers perspective. On the other hand someone living in my neighborhood may use words such as friendship, family, struggle, and hard working to describe the exact same area. This is one thing that is unique about human reality. The fact that two totally different people can look at any one object and come up with two different perspectives is unique. Reality for the individual is based upon the meaning one puts on the thing in itself. Those were just two perspectives used to describe the neighborhood that I lived in but the thing is there are probably a million more different perspectives that are out there. We as humans survive based on the artificial environment that we produce. We give meanings to objects to better help us to adapt and understand the reality that we are living in. That is why no one person’s reality is the same because based on your social grouping the meanings that you carry may be different than the meanings of someone else.

So far I have discussed perspectives and social environment and how they help create the uniqueness in human reality. I will now like to discuss how symbols play a role in adding to the uniqueness of human reality. Symbols are important to society because societies culture is dependent upon them. Symbols help us to distinguish right from wrong, achievement, and also failure, symbols also give us guidelines on how to communicate with one another. According to Charon, “S
