Why Does God Allow Suffering

The question many ask in the midst of adversity is, “If God is loving, why is there suffering?” This question is not an easy one to answer. Christianity does not exempt one from pain, from disappointment, or from the hardships of this life. God disciplines those he loves. Romans 3:23 states, “We all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” God is forever by the side of His children and is constantly there to help handle the trial that has been dealt. God says in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” God loves His children more than the human mind can conceive. He places trials and tribulation in their lives to strengthen and deepen their spiritual relationship with the Lord God Almighty. These adversities also contribute to strengthen their personal character.

The testing of one’s faith develops perseverance and, in turn, reinforces that one constantly requires a personal relationship with God. “Every disappointment is a trial of your faith…a test that proves the genuineness of your relationship with your God and His word” (Arthur, 1997, p. 29). God continually tests one’s faith to keep them on the right pa

In God’s loving sovereignty He carefully designs each and every disappointment-from trivial to tragic-to accomplish His transforming purposes for our lives (Arthur, 1997, inside flap). There are no coincidences, everything happens for a reason. When one relinquishes control of their life and offers it all to God-He blesses them with His wisdom and love. According to Arthur (1997),

Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.

God does not place these obstacles in one’s life without reason. Rather, He carefully places them and ultimately one reaps the benefits. The benefits include developing perseverance, becoming more like Jesus Christ, and having the ability to witness the revealing of God’s glory. God is always here for His children and whatever the trial or difficulty, it is never more than one can handle. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Some day all of God’s glory will be revealed when one ascends to heaven where there is no pain, crying, or suffering. God is going to take away all the hurt, anger, frustration, downfalls, defeats, and failure, and unconditionally love His people for eternity.

God is faithful to His children and will not permit them to be tested beyond what they can bear. But He will also provide a way of escape. God has a tremendous love for His children and this vast love is infinite. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 says, “…My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness…I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in diffic
