Why Human Sexuality Should Be Required In College
It is estimated that 79% of all college students engage in some sort of sexual activity, whether it be vaginal, oral, or anal sex. How many of these students really know enough about sex and the consequences of sex to make an educated and informed decision? Sexual education classes are offered in public school as early as the fifth grade, but many times they can not inform the student of all the choices and consequences of sex because of the particular school district. Therefore they do not receive all of the information about sex that they should. That is why Psychology 334, Human Sexuality, should be a required course at Sam Houston State University. Before taking this course, many people go into class thinking that they know everything there is to know about sex. They’ve seen the videos, had the talks, experienced it, and more. Little do they actually know. During one of the first class periods the students take a sex quiz. At this point in time, students realize that they have a lot to learn about sex and all that it entails. Human Sexuality is a course that touches on much more than just sex. One of the first topics this course touches on is gender issues. Why girls wear pink and boys wear
blue. Many students had never thought about this before. They just followed it because that’s the way it is. This class makes them question such things. It makes people think a little bit differently about gender roles and gender identity than ever before. In that way it makes people more open-minded towards all sorts of gender issues. The more open-minded people are, the less likely they are to prejudge others. This class goes into depth on the genital make up of males and females. Very few people can name every part of the male or female anatomy correctly. This course gives you the chance to learn about all the different parts and functions of one’s body. Knowing this information can help you out not only sexually, but when you go to the doctor, you can sound educated about your body. Another huge issue with college students is sexually transmitted diseases (stds). They generally do no feel comfortable asking questions about sexually transmitted diseases to any, whether it is a friend, boyfriend/girlfriend, or physician. This class fills you in on all of the sexually transmitted diseases that have been discovered to date.. There is no candy coating to this chapter. It is shocking and appalling as to how many different diseases are out there. Perhaps if all college students were more aware of the diseases, they wouldn’t be as careless about protecting themselves. At the end of the course students find themselves knowing more than they ever thought possible about sexual subje
