Philosophy and Religion: Questions and Answers Philosophy and religion have existed for centuries. Even in today’s technologically advanced environment, there are still many questions about life and its meaning. Humans want to know the basic who, what, when, where, why and how of life. Who created the earth, the universe, and the rest of existence? Is there a right and wrong; if so, what is it? When did it begin and will it ever end? Where does the universe end and do we go anywhere after we die? And of course, why are we here? At some point in each individual’s life, he or she will ponder these questions. For each philosophical question, there are many religious answers and explanations. It seems as though that’s where the desire for religion comes from. However, with so many different answers to the same questions, how is anyone to know what the right answer is or if there is one at all? Nonetheless, people cling to religion for the solutions is provides. For every problem religion offers not only the remedy, but the hope that one can chose their own destiny based on how they live their lives. This idea of reward or punishment is what religious people count on, base their faith on, and ultimately how they live their lives. Religion has answered the great philosophical questions and given each person’s life meaning and purpose and most of all hope. Regardless of the world around them, there is something bigger and better, not quite tangible, that awaits a person if he or she can prove herself or himself worthy. This is reinforced by the social laws people impose on themselves through institutions. It is favorable because people prefer structure over chaos and answers to the most crucial of philosophical questions. Some do no believe in one single God, but many deities that work in harmony to maintain a world order that people have become accustomed to. This world order includes the laws of science and nature that many people take for granted and rarely question. Humans find comfort and security in this order. They want to know why certain things happen so they might be able to discover a pattern and a way to predict and prepare for the future. The greatest human fear is the unknown, but if they feel they can live their lives in a way to bring on good fortune, they are more inclined to do so. If one can establish that a God or Gods exist, one can develop a relationship with it or them. Through this relationship, a person can feel as though he or she has an influence on what the God or Gods do. This eternal parental figure also provides a type of infinite accountability. Right and wrong exists, if it didn’t there would be anarchy. People who lack a conscience usually end up in jail or in a mental institution. Where does this innate sense of right and wrong come from?
