The persistence of the traditional definition of women’s roles

The status of women in American Society since 1940 has been greatly impacted by changing economic conditions, the persistence of the traditional definition of women’s roles, and the rebirth of an organized women’s movement. Women’s roles changed during and after World War II. They became more involved in the work force. Women gained a higher status in American Society since 1940.

With the persistence of a traditional definition of women’s roles, it was difficult for the women to overcome this stereotype. For many years, women were primarily housewives, they only entered the work force if unmarried. This changed during World War II; women were taking up jobs as factory workers in fields women have never worked in before. They were getting the work done needed to suppor

t the war, while earning a decent wage. Some women, however, worked for no wage; they were known as Rosie the Riveters. Women took on harder jobs than ever before, and they were continuing their responsibilities as housewives, and working to support the war efforts. This was what brought women into the labor force, allowing them to hold onto white collar jobs. These women had to put up a fight when the war veterans came back wanting their jobs back. Veterans wanted women to go back to their job as a housewife. Although it was a hard fought battle when the men came back, the women were able to remain in these jobs, changing the traditional definition of women’s roles.

The status of women in America rose with the changing economic conditions. In the 1930’s, everyone was poor, dealing with a bad economy, and a very low employment rate. This all changed when the men when off to war in the early 1940’s. With the women working in the work forces, they were starting to make a lot of their own money, not needing to rely on their husband’s salary. This war was able to ease the great depression.
