Women took jobs to build airplanes for their husbands to use in the war. Five million women entered the work force, and made up 36 percent of the American labor force (Sinnot 13). Thousands of women took jobs in airplane factories. They assembled tens of thousands of military airplanes needed in the war effort (“American Women in WWII” 391). Some aircraft plants were as big as small towns, and the noise of production was deafening. The women’s muscles became sore, their hands were swollen, and they got backaches and headaches. Many women had trouble sleeping because the noise continued to throb throughout their bodies, even when they were at home. The women went through many pains, but did their best and made thousands of airplanes that helped in the war.

While women did the jobs that traditionally were for the men they also had to keep up the jobs of the house. The women were very busy, and hardly had time for sleep. Women who worked at night finished at 6:00 or 7:00 A.M., and immediately went to buy rationed meat before the stores were all out. When they got home they had to make breakfast for their children before they went off to school. While the children where at school the women would sleep until around 11:30 A.M. or until the children came home for lunch. When the kids went back to school the women would clean all the dishes, and go back to bed until 3:00 P.M., when the children came home from school. Then the women would do the housework, make dinner, and then went back to work at around 10:00 P.M. (Sinnot 41). Women held up the roles for themselves and for the men.

Women nurses helped in the army and navy during the war. The women of the Red Cross, and women in specialty groups such as the Office of Strategic Services helped with the wars. During World War II there were 57,000 nurses (Gruhzit-Hoyt 2). They served to care for American soldiers, on hospital ships, in flight evacuator crews, on the beachheads, and in hospitals at home and overseas. Army nurses cared for the wounded.
