It seems as though in everyday life we encounter stress. The stresses that are encountered daily are most likely the result of our jobs. According to the article Employer-sponsored Programs Try to Keep Workplace Stress in Check, by J. Krivyanski, “A study by Northwestern National Life found one-fourth of all employees view their jobs as the number one stressor in their lives.” With employee views like these, employers are attempting to create better work environments. In the same article by Krivyanski, he states “Nearly one half of large companies in the United States have started to provide some type of stress management programs for their work forces.” Obviously, the need is there. With recent advances in technology stress levels have increased. This is said to be due to being able to instantly reach someone. Most of us carry cell phones or pagers. Amazingly, when the pressure is on, people will do whatever it takes to get the job done. This pressure leads to stress and doing unethical things to accomplish the task at hand. McShulskis, “A national survey revealed that almost half of the workers in the United States perform unethical activities because of job pressure.” This conduct leads to cutting corners in quality, covering up incidents, abusing or lying about sick leave and lying to deceive customers. In today’s market, companies cannot take chances with unethical behavior due incidents like Enron. If you are under pressure, commit an unethical activity, and happen to get away with it, you will still be suffering stress from guilt.
