World Creation Theories

There are many different views on the creation of the world and its peoples. Some of these documents from different civilizations have been saved and written down in order to show others their beliefs. Five of these creation stories are found in our book given to us to study and read. The first creation story was written by Quiche’ Indians of Central America. It was written down about the sixteenth century after the arrival of the Spaniards but has been an orally passed down story ever since the emergence of this group. They are believed to be descendants of the Mayan tribes once located in Central America. Their story is called “Popul Vuh.” The native Andean peoples of South America wrote the second creation story. It was also an oral story passed down from generation to generation and started by the Checas tribe living in Huarochiri, or present day Peru. The Spaniards also took over their empire in conquering their tribe and took an interest in this creation story. Therefore, the creation story is partly written by the Spanish missionaries or priests that settled in the area. This was written down around the end of the sixteenth century. It is a mix of Checas oral history that is seen through the eyes of Spanis

h Roman Catholicism. Their story is called the “Huarochiri Manuscript.” The ancient Mesopotamian people in the Tigris and Euphrates Valley wrote the third story, called “The Creation Epic”. These civilizations were characterized by their geographical location and wrote their history due to the ideas of the place they lived and worked in. Their story was first recorded about 2000 B.C.E. The fourth story comes from the Holy Bible in the book of Genesis. It is also written down in the Hebrew Torah. It was written by the Hebrew people of the time and is recorded in both the Torah and the Old Testament. This is the beginnings of Christianity and was written with that point of view. It was recorded in writing around the tenth century B.C.E. The Japanese wrote the fifth and final creation story in our book. It was recorded in writing in 712 C.E. It was based on the knowledge of restoring and lifting up Japan’s great Imperial lines and their leading families. This story is called “The Kojiki”, or “Records of Ancient Matters.” All of these have very different backgrounds and were written in different periods of time. Obviously, each one was influenced by the times and they can be compared and contrasted in many different ways.

As one can see from the creation stories, they are very different in views and beliefs. They all share similarities in certain areas but lack a flow in others. There are many other ways that one could compare or contrast any of these stories. There is the relationship between humanity and the environment, the relationship between the genders, and the role of violence in the process of creation as well. There are many ways that these five creation stories can be used as examples for all. These are all very interesting stories and are a very important part in the history of the earth. Each story shows and exposes the people of its time and allows the reader to see the ways that these civilizations and people lived in their day and age. They endured many hardships and had very many different beliefs formed on them by many different things as well. These differences in geography and times are shown in their stories and give the reader a clear insight into how their world was formed from the beginning of time. As one takes the time to read each story, a revelation can be revealed into many different areas of history as well. It is more than a creation story, it is the written documentation of people’s lifestyles and founding beliefs of their traditions still alive and full in today’s society.
