World Of Music - (Boyz N The Hood)
At the age of 23, John Singleton was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for his debut film, Boyz N the Hood. In the movie, the director portraits the life of three young African-American males growing up in South Central, LA and the hardship they have to go through. The main character Tre is play by Cuba Gooding Jr., a bright underachiever who was sent to live with his father (Lawrence Fishburne) in South Central. There he befriends Ricky (Morris Chestnut), a heightening football star, and Doughboy (Ice Cube), a would-be gangbanger. The reason Singleton uses South Central is to illustrate the obstacles facing these young men who struggle with violence all around them each and everyday. He distinguishes them as average teenagers who are caught in a situation where they have no control. Through the use of variety of music in the movie, the young director is able to allow the film to move beyond the boundaries of just telling a story. Although there are many scenes utilized through music instruments, others are emphasized through the lyrics of the music. If listened carefully to the song play in the car when Tre and his father driving to their house, the lyrics “Things are going to get easier” can be easily heard in the background. The message clearly states the fact that things are going to be easier for Tre now on, and that his father is going to help him achieve whatever goals he set out for. The young director wisely uses music throughout the movie to magnify each important situation. By using music as his main tool, Singleton is able to clearly display the similarities, and differences between each character. He also presents a different perception of each character to the audience through the diverse styles of music that are used throughout in the movie. Although the movie does bring a pretty negative image of the inner city, but Boyz N the Hood still bring a close, in depth look at what it's like living in South Central, LA.
