Peace vs Patriotism

World peace is every persons inner most desire, but world peace will never be attained in today’s society. It is far to difficult to predict inevitable acts of greed, hatred and personal satisfaction that hinder the world’s ability to attain peace. Therefore it is not a shock that I was angered by the protest for peace which was carried out in the MU quad. The protesters that day showed a complete lack of patriotism and many did not have any convincing arguments to sway me to an outlook of peace. Also their motifs for protest were completely contradictory. Not to mention that military personnel do not frown upon such gatherings.

The lack of patriotism which protesters inadvertently display is almost repulsive. In a country which allows all people freedoms that other nations can only dream of, people still feel it is only right to point out why such wars are not right. No one in their right minds enjoys war. This includes protesters, military personnel, citizens, and even the President. However, protesters are somewhat like an orthodox religion. They feel that what they are doing is the only way to resolve the problem, thereby discarding the ideas of their nation’s leaders. Ignorance in a

But protests against this war are not so glorious. They have no basis for peace. Americans believe there is a threat. The actions they have been displaying is very

percent of Americans supported military action in Afghanistan. (CNN) Where did these people go and hide? All those Americans supported military action for fear that something like this would happen again and they did not want that to happen. Now I fully understand that Iraq is not Afghanistan, and the reasons for fighting are different. However, these protesters feel that it is not necessary to fight in Iraq but instead to spend the military budget on education. I will address this hypocrisy later. But lets be realistic, there is a very real threat in Saddam Hussein. According to a CNN poll eighty-six percent of Americans feel that Iraq is a threat. (CNN) Protesters must understand that peace is unattainable when an entire country (Iraq) despises our nation. Protesters feel that it is not necessary to fight, however, they overlook the fact that the constitution that allows them the right to protest was won through war. They must also understand that war has also helped protect that right they are privileged to use. This war is not for oil as many protesters believe, but in turn to protect their non-patriotic movements. The definition of a patriot is, “one who loves his country and zealously guards its welfare (Webster 531).” Protesting for peace is not guarding our nations welfare, when one man (Hussein) wants to destroy our way of life. Instead of protesting against our country, how about protesting in support of our troops who will most likely die protecting your constitutional right to protest. And when all is said and done, be peaceful that your still alive and not suffering at the hands of tyranny. John Stuart Mill said:

It was also, to my surprise, scary at the ways in whic
