Modern day society turned into the society of 1984 George Orwell was a big contributor to anticommunist literature around the World War II period. When Orwell was once speaking of his novel 1984 he made the following statement, “ I do not believe that the kind of society I describe necessarily will arrive, but I believe that something resembling it could arrive.” Orwell did not live to see this theory of his come true, however over the years more and more events happen to prove him correct. The people of today’s society already have to deal with some of the circumstance that the people in 1984 did, only today they are less severe. Today technology, war, and a united hatred towards a certain person or group, set up what could very possibly turn into the same conditions as in 1984. The belief that people in today’s society have complete freedom and privacy in this country is a dangerously misleading notion. As alluded to in 1984, such a place as Oceania would not be possible without the use technology. It is very doubtful that many people really think about what actually happens when they send an email, talk on a cell phone, or purchase goods online with a credit card. The same technologies that grant people more fr
In Summation even though today’s society has not had to deal with conditions as sever as those in 1984. Today’s people are already dealing with the misuse of technology, growing globalization and war, and uniting together to stand against a single figure and or group. Today technology, war, and a united hatred towards a certain person or group, set up what could indeed turn into the same situation as in 1984. However as long as there are people like Winston Smith in the novel, alive today to keep helping others remember that the government is not all-powerful and people do not always have to follow the norm, today’s society will hopefully never see conditions as harsh as those in 1984. Clearly mass control is an issue today, with globalization gathering more and more momentum by the day. Today’s people fall victim to mass politics on a daily basis mainly through media manipulation, which people have seen a great deal of since the recent happenings in our country such as the happenings of 9/11. For example how people are being led into yet another war in the Middle East, breaking numerous international laws and treaties remembering the artificially puppeteered wars in 1984. Thus making the coming war illegal, remember the absence of any real laws aimed at protecting the public in 1984. There was never a time of peace in the novel. Oceania was always said to be at war however as it is stated in Goldstein’s book the word war had started to mean very little to some of the people in Oceania, such as Winston. Goldstein’s book states “The very word “war,” therefore, has become misleading. It would be accurate to say that by becoming continuous war has ceased to exist
