DDT

Although DDT is dangerous when used in the environment it should not be banned worldwide due to its disease preventing abilities. DDT should be banned from places where the solely rely on it as an insecticide. DDT effectively prevents diseases in poorer countries. Although DDT prevents disease in poor countries it should not be their only choice to prevent malaria and other diseases.

DDT should not be used in the environment. DDT is not something we should be using in our earth. For one thing it does something called bioaccumulation. What this is is an increase in the concentration of a chemical over time in a biological organism compared with the chemical’s concentration in the environment. The first stage of this is uptake. Now the way we uptake DDT is many. DDT is used to repel insects from the food we eat, it’s all over our food. Another thing is they feed someone of those fruits to animals that are later sent to meat companies, and then served to the public. The second step is storage. This is when the DDT stores itself in our fatty tissues. Fatty tissues are hard to excrete making it hard for us to get the DDT out of our systems. DDT is dangerous when used in the environment, and should be banned in all countries except for those using it to prevent malaria and other diseases. DDT causes disorders in humans and animals. DDT is very effective at reflecting mosquitos thereby preventing malaria in poorer countries where other treatments can not be afforded. Last, DDT should not be the only choice for people in third world countries. Better, less expensive treatments must be developed so that one day DDT can be gotten rid of all together.

DDT should not be banned in countries where they use it to prevent malaria and other diseases. DDT is an excellent mosquito repellent, and quite inexpensive, therefore it is favoured in countries where they do not have a lot of money to spend. Many countries have witnessed the amazing ability that DDT have on reducing malaria. Greece saw malaria cases drop from about 1 to 2 million cases a year to close to zero thanks to DDT. In India, malaria deaths went from 2,800,000 in 1948 down to 17 in 1964. Then in 1969 when DDT was taken away the cases rose back up to 2,500,000. When Sri Lanka stopped using DDT, the number of malaria cases rose again to 2,500,000. Other diseases that DDT prevent is break-bone fever, lyme disease, and leishmaniasis where the virus erodes away at the face leaving the person horribly disfigured. Cases have been reported in hunting dogs in the United States and Ontario, Canada. Also, sign of the plague have been reemerging. Many countries have been helped by the use of DDT.

DDT has a large effect on humans. DDT is a endocrine disruptor. What that means is that DDT can mimic hormones from our bodies a
