Diligence

There are different effects for being diligent and not being diligent, and by closely examining these effects, a conclusion can be made about how we should apply diligence to our lives. Diligence is “characterized by steady, earnest, and energetic application and effort” (Webster’s Dictionary). John MacArthur defines diligence as “the ability to regulate one’s conduct by principle and sound judgment, rather than by impulse, desire, or social custom.” The Bible says in first Timothy 4:7b, “on the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness.” In other words, be diligent. In this paper the effects of not being diligent, the effects of being diligent, how we should apply diligence to our lives, and examples of people who where and were not diligent will be shown. This paper will also show how to become diligent, examples of people who are diligent both in the Bible and during today, and examples of people who are not diligent both in the Bible and today.

There are never any good affects for not being diligent. It may seem easy to not work when you should be working, but in the end, it is not worth it. The Bible has a lot to say about not being diligent. Proverbs 10:26 shows that a sluggard, or

By now it should be very clear how we should apply diligence to our lives. It is easy to see that no one can go anywhere in life without being diligent. Not being diligent also affects our spiritual lives. We cannot honor God throughout our lives without being diligent. In fact, we will be punished if we are not being diligent. The Bible also tells us that leading people away from him is one of the worst things that we can do. We are to diligently strive to lead people towards God. We are also told in the Bible to do everything to the glory of God. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life.” Deuteronomy 4:9 says “Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip form your heat as long as you live.” Psalm 119:4 says, “You have commanded us to keep your precepts diligently, (they are to be fully obeyed.)” You can see from some of these examples of all the things that God wants us to do diligently. God wants us to do everything diligently, to the best of our ability, and to the glory of God. How can we honor God if we are not striving to do everything to the best of our abilities? It should be painfully clear by now that if we are not being diligent, we are asking God to pour his wrath upon us. We are clearly told in that Bible that the punishment for sin is death. Therefore, it is an act of mercy from God that we are not killed whenever we are lazy. God sent His only Son to die on the cross for us, and it is like a slap in the face of God. We should diligently try to thank God at every moment we can. We should discipline ourselves to not sin, and we should do everything to the best of our ability. In other words, we need to diligently avoid sin, and we need to diligently strive to be holy. We should also try to set a good example for those who look up to us. Almost everyone has someone who looks up to him or her. Luke 17:2 says, “It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea, that he would cause one of these little ones to stumble.” It is absolutely necessary that we be diligent so that we do not cause anyone who looks up to us to be led astray. We can see from the verse above that leading a young child of God astray is one of the worst things that we can do. Because of the punishment that we would receive, it would be better for us to die than to lead a young child of God astray.

There are several examples of diligence in the Bible. One very well known example is Jesus’ parable of talents. It starts with a man about to go on a journey, and he entrusts a certain number of talents to each of the three servants, each according to his own ability. To the first servant, the master gave five, to the second he gave two, and to the last servant he gave one talent. The servants who were given two and five talents both doubled their money, but the servant who only received one talent hid his in the ground. When the man returned he was very pleased with what the two servants had done, but he was very angry with the third man. In Mathew 25:29-30 the master of the servants says, “For to everyone who has shall more be given, and he shall have an abundance; but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away. And cast out the worthless slave into the outer darkness; in that place there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” We can learn from Jesus’ parable that we shall be blessed with more if we are diligent, but what we do have will be taken away if we are lazy. Douglas Wilson gives an example of what will happen to those who are lazy in his book Future Men, where he says, “When somebody fills out a negative job evaluation, or tells a prospective new employer that Billy needs to learn what ‘get the lead out’ means, he is not gossiping. Work is a public activity and s
