Jewish Survival

Ever since God established His covenant between Himself and the Jewish people they have been constantly oppressed and persecuted. Through the years Judaism held together and outlived Romans, Greeks, and even the Nazis. Although each of these nations were once great and powerful, the Jewish minority have managed to preserver and survive through everything from slavery, dislocation, and genocide. How have such a people managed to live through such catastrophes and still be able to keep their religion and identity? I believe that there are two basic answers to this question. Firstly, Judaism has survived because it has given the Jewish society an excellent quality of life. Secondly, an answer, which is more supernatural than logical but explains perfectly as to why the Jewish people are still a strong and thriving nation, is the influence of God.

Traditional Jewish communities have usually enjoyed a better quality of life as opposed to the outside cultures or powers that have often made up the majority of the society in which the Jewish people have lived. In traditional Jewish scriptures it is taught that the Jewish people have survived not because of their faith or their power, but because of God’s faithfulness to them and by His power. Psalm 124 states that; “ …had He not upheld us, our enemies would have destroyed us long ago.” Jewish survival through God’s so - called “hand” can also be explained in the very covenant between God and the Jewish people. God promised Abraham: “ And I will establish My covenant between you and your descendents after you throughout their generations, an eternal covenant, to be your God and the God of your descendents after you.” (Genesis 17:7) Lastly, another example of Jewish survival is given in Genesis 53:17, where it is stated that the Jewish people are as numerous as “…the stars of the sky and the sand on the seashore.” Through a supernatural viewpoint it can be said that God has given his word to the Jewish people that He will protect them and unsure their survival no matter what.
