Tertiary Education is Not a Luxury
Luxury is not simply expense and tertiary education is not simply university. Come on ladies and gentlemen, we all know this; even if you look into the old trustworthy yet common dictionary, you will discover that luxury means “non essential” and “any pleasure indulged in” and to say that its expensive is very narrow minded, because while we as the negative acknowledge that there is some expense with tertiary education, as there also is with food, shelter, even going to this debate in Daniel’s car but luxury, luxury by definition means its an activity that’s non essential, or is a pleasure to be indulged in. Our team also realise that logically, tertiary education is any qualification a person has received after primary and secondary education. Tertiary education is anything from a nail technician to a brain surgeon i.e. any formal education which results in a qualification post secondary school.So what the other team in effect are saying, is that any form of education past secondary school is simply a non-essential pleasure! The current $cost of tertiary education, while some may view it as a luxury because they consider it very unaffordable- this is sooo narrow minded because there are other countries in the world with a greater value on tertiary education who not only offer free education, but financial incentives, for example New Zealand who have no hecs But not only this, but given that most tertiary education is a professional pathway one takes, how many professionals would you like to have untrained? How is it that in America not long ago, the effect was shown by 2 somewhat dense men who believed themselves to be professional enough to perform surgery on one another without tertiary education training. The larger man of the 2 was rather distressed about his weight, so the other man thought he would give him liposuction. He Proceeded to slice the large man’s stomach open with a kitchen knife, and would you believe, used a household vacuum cleaner to suck out the fatty deposits in his stomach. I am sure it will be no surprise to you that the man undergoing the operation, did in fact die. Migration policies- now focus on skilled labour looking to bring more professionals into this country. Paul Keating’s comment that “Australia is a “banana republic”” infers that it is only a small step above 3rd world countries because we don’t have enough tertiary skilled people in our country.
