Effects of Post-Operative Wound Infections

The purpose of this study is to look at how health care can have a wider impact on the patient and the place where that care is given. The topic of this assignment is ‘post-operative wound infection’. Wound infection be it pressure sore, venous ulcer or surgical wound, has an impact on every area of nursing care. It is an issue all nurses have to address and act upon. The assignment will look at the cost to both patient and hospital trust, the impact on primary care groups, effects of the patients local environment, risk factors, current research, ethical issues and current nursing policies

Interest in this area of nursing came about after nursing a 62 year old lady who had infected pressure sores and an infected surgical wound. For the purpose of this assignment the patient shall be known as Mrs Harriet Potter, to protect her identity. Clause 10 of the UKCC Professional Code of Conduct states “protect all confidential information concerning patients and clients in the course of professional practice and make disclosures only with consent”. Research shows there are two main indications for the use of gloves preventing HAIs; to protect hands from contamination with organic matter and micro-organisms and to reduce their risks of transmission of micro-organisms to both patients and staff (Infection Control Nurses Association 1999, Ward et al 1997,Garner 1996). However wearing gloves is not good enough, good hand-washing should also be maintained to prevent transmission of micro-organism from one individual to another. Effective hand decontamination results in significant reductions in the carriage of potential pathogens on the hands and logically decreases the incidence of preventable HAI leading to a reduction in patient morbidity and mortality.(Larson 1995, Garner and Favero 1986, Ward et al 1997 and Teare et al 1999).
