Artemesia Gentilesche is one of the few well-known female artists of her era. She is known for her use of strong contrast of light and dark in a dramatic presentation, as was used in the Baroque style of painting. She was both praised for her artwork, and also criticized for exercising her artistic talents in a male dominated field. She studied, adapted and reinvented some of the skills from Caravaggio. During her career, she moved to Italy and introduced this style of art to the Florentines. There, she worked with a Florentine teacher, Tassi, whom Artemesia accused of raping her, and then went through a highly publicized court trial, during which Artemesia’s reputation was damaged although Tassi was found and guilty and sent to prison for a short time.
