In the concluding realizations toward the end of the novel, Nel is able to accept regrets in her life for following conformities of good to gain social acceptance and she is able to acknowledge the pride Sula was able to take in defining herself by her own standards. Not only did Sula’s supposed evil way of life present no real problems to herself, but is was shown to help the community in the Bottom recognize what they perceived as evils in Sula and force upon themselves an incentive to act what they believed good. This makes evident people’s desire to distinguish definitions of evil as they do to Sula and shows why people of the bottom seek to impose meaning on random occurrences, because after Sula’s death the Bottom community no longer has the uniting influence she had put forth. In these regards, Nel’s final realization shows that she is able to mourn the loss of Sula and therefore understand distinctions between good and evil based on all that has happened as she has grown to an older woman.
