Carl Sandburg: Chicago Writer

There are several famous writers that have based their operations in Chicago, Illinois; however, one in particular interested me due to his obtaining of the Pulitzer for his prose Abraham Lincoln: The War Years. This individual won the Pulitzer once again with the publishing of his collective work of poems called Complete Poems in 1951. Additionally, this author has been presented with various other awards including, but not limited to, honorary degrees from Lombard, Knox, and Northwestern Universities. He is a poet, children’s book writer, prose writer, and political organizer. His name is Carl Sandburg.

Carl Sandburg was not actually born in Chicago; his hometown was Galesburg, Illinois. Although Galesburg was the place of Sandburg’s birth, he did however base his career in Chicago, Illinois. Sandburg’s parents were Swedish immigrants to America. They emigrated from a territory just north of Sweden. Sandburg was not actually Carl’s family’s original last name. Sandburg was a name adopted by Carl’s family because of a need to fit in once in the U.S. As a young man, Sandburg made the de

cision to drop out of school while in the eight-grade. Sandburg worked in various areas of employment. He did everything. Sandburg earned his keep by laying bricks, shining shoes, harvesting wheat, delivering milk, and the list goes on. It was after these years of doing odd jobs that Sandburg decided to hit the road as a hobo in 1897. Sandburg learned a great deal of folk songs as a hobo, which he used to support himself with, impart. These folk songs became an important part of his career in later years as he would perform them at speaking engagements, and publish many of them.

It was in the midst of these travels that Sandburg started to develop his world-view. Sandburg was said to have had an epiphany concerning the great divide between rich and poor. This divide caused a disbelief in Sandburg concerning the concept of capitalism. It was this “disbelief” that opened Sandburg’s heart to the idea socialism. This epiphany of politics greatly affected Sandburg’s writings. Later, Sandburg attended Lombard University. It was here that Sandburg sharpened his writing skills and met his mentor
