Bias

org I took three of the "Bias" tests that they offer. The first one that I took was the age test which attempts to see people's preference between old and young people. For me the test says that I have little to no automatic preference which I guess means that during the test I did not give any responses that would make it seem I have any preference for one or the other. I was not surprised to see that 58% of the people who have taken the test had a preference for young people because most of the people who take the test are younger people, but even with that I was a little surprised by my score. I would have thought that i would have some preference for younger people being that almost everyone around me is young and the ones I spend most of my time with.
After that test, I took the test that examines the association between African-American people and weapons. the percents on the site for the people who have taken the test before are high for the African-Americans and gets lower for Europeans. If you think about everything that people are taught from the time that they are young and what they see in the media, its not surprising many people would have a stereotype for African-Americans. Then again, this test says that it does its observation from split second impulses that give little to no time to deliberate about the topic. So it would have to be a subconscience decision that people are making from some form of stereotype that they have. Even if they might say that they do not feel this way, " We don't see things how they are, we see things how we are". It is all in our minds.
This site really makes us reevaluate the ideas that we have about ourselves. We might consider ourselves to have no preference about things but then take this test and you learn something else. The African-American with weapons test gave me a "slight association between Blacks and weapons". I never considered myself to have any associations between African-Americans and weapons, but I would guess that maybe in my subconscience there is something that would make me think that way.
