Imaginary Numbers

Imaginary numbers, or complex numbers, as they are sometimes called, have many intrical uses in our lives, other than confusing students on math tests. They are used in fields such as engineering, architecture, and electricity. I chose to investigate this concept to get a real idea of why anyone would perform equations with numbers that don't even exist. In addition, I also have an inkling of an interest in engineering. Imaginary numbers, despite their departure from existence, can in fact improve our lives in many ways we never though possible.

One of those ways is present in almost every room we enter, helping electricians wire our lights and other appliances. The reason behind the use of imaginary numbers is that, when electricity flows through an electrical circuit component, such as a light bulb, it resists the flow of electricity. However, when electricity f

Another application of complex numbers is in the construction of buildings, as well as the pipes and beams involved in the architecture required. They affect the analysis of the stresses and strains on beams in tall buildings and suspension bridges. Imaginary numbers are applied when studying the resonance formula in such objects, and arise in the eigenvalues and eigenvalues of very large matrices involved. They are also used in studying the movements of liquids and fluids around solid objects, such as the flow of water around a pipe. Thus, imaginary numbers can help us in the architecture of buildings and in the construction of tools, not simply in electronics.
