Psychology in Sport

As the elite touch coach of 3 representative sides this season I have a number of aims and goals for my teams.

3- To instill in all of my players the up most confidence in themselves and their team members

4- To encourage and nurture mental and psychological capabilities

One of the first things that will be done at the start of the season is for each athlete to write down their own personal goals for this season and then their goals for the team. These goals must be achievable and will be reviewed at various stages of the season.

At this level of representation of touch football all players would be in the autonomous stage of skills/learning. Because of this I am making the assumption most skills will have already been perfected and players are very competent in all physical areas of touch football. My training program is designed so that athletes retain this physical excellence. The training program will include relevant to touch training principles such as progressive overload, frequency, intensity, duration, and specificity. Fitness components covered will be speed, agility, co-ordination, aerobic capacity and anaerobic. A


4- Attention control is away for athletes to control and channel there thoughts to achieve performance improving results. It involves the capability of the athlete to be able to block out negatives and focus on the positive. This can be used in conjunction with dissociation (the ability to remove one’s self and ignore intrinsic sensory feedback and focusing on a positive disassociated with the body).

3- Motivation. At the beginning of the season each athlete’s goals (both individual and for the team) will be recorded and used through out the season as a source of motivation. They will constantly be reviewed and discussed whenever the athlete feels necessary. Setting goals can help mental imagery and aid attention control and self instruction.

Some psychological strategies available to me are:

The most important psychological tool that a player has is his or her ability to bring about arousal. Optimum arousal level varies from athlete to athlete and I believe it is my job as coach to know each individual to the extent that I know how they work best, what sort of teaching they respond best to and the use of manipulation of arousal levels in order to be able to help each of my athlete’s achieve this optimal arousal.
