Musicians in Singapore call it the “local music scene”. And over the years expansion has seen home-grown musicians gaining popularity in Singapore. But why is the local music scene still searching to find its identity (original sound)? This failure, in turn, hampers our musicians from moving onto the world stage. Are we influenced by the integrative mechanism (marketing their music through their mass media) and social facts from the functionalistic structure of British and American music so much so that consumers (music fans) feel that our music is clichéd? Or is our society shielded by organizations of power (i.e. the censorship board) to a certain extend that musicians in Singapore cannot freely express their true feelings through music?
