First off AIDS is in short for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Acquired means you can get infected with it. Immune Deficiency means a weakness in the body's system that fights diseases. And Syndrome means a group of health problems that make up a disease. That’s basically what it means word for word.

AIDS is caused by the virus called HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus because you don’t really get AIDS right away. You get it later on. HIV is the same thing that Magic Johnson has. If you get infected with HIV, your body will try to fight the infection. It will make "antibodies", special molecules that are supposed to fight HIV. And usually they aren’t able to fight off the disease because its some sort of strong virus that the body can’t kill.(*)

The biggest known threat is sex. You can avoid any risk of HIV if you practice abstinence (not having sex). You also won't get infected if your penis, mouth, vagina or rectum don't touch anyone else's penis, mouth, vagina, or rectum. Safe activities include kissing, erotic massage, masturbation or hand jobs (mutual masturbation). A monogamous or faithful relationship is safe if both of you are HIV negative or uninfected, only have sex with each other, and don’t do drugs because it can be picked up through needles. It is possible to reduce the risk of infection with HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases by using barriers like condoms. Traditional condoms go on the penis, and a new type of condom goes in the vagina or in the rectum. (*)

Back in the day people used to get AIDS through blood transfusions in hospitals but now there’s screenings and checks to make sure that it doesn’t get through.
