FESPACO 2003 - Its Progress

Many may ask, what is FEAPACO? Well, let me shed a little light on that. For one week every two years, the city of Ouagadougou holds the largest festival of the continent – the Pan-African film and television festival called FESPACO. It brings members of the film industry, African and otherwise, to share their knowledge and ideas on how best to improve and promote their work, as well as to create and establish working relationships.

The festival was first established in 1969, and by January 7, 1972, became “an institution by governmental decree”. In that same year, the first official winner of the festival was Oumarou Ganda of Niger, who won best film award with “Le Wazzou Polygame”. Since then, there have been winners from Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and other parts of Africa. In 1995, the winner of the festival was Rob Reiner with his film “Misery”. This year, the award for best set design went to Mauritanian director, Abderrahmane Sissako for his film “Heremakono”, which received the Stallion de Yennenga for best film.

The film, “Starting Over” for example, focuses on the issue of HIV and AIDS as it affects a middle-class Nigerian family.

Over the years, 1995 for example, there were countries that could successfully make more than three productions per year. This year, the Festival screened over 100 films in the eight days the festival was held. In terms of what she (Bryce) sees as perhaps the only disappointing fact, which the festival possessed was the distribution of the films, which was limited. Most of the distribution was available at private addresses. During past festivals, there were problems with the distribution of films, finding people to showcase the films, to introduce the directors; even getting the films to the festival on time was an issue. In 2001, some directors attempted to bring their films themselves at the opening of the festival to ensure th
