Frank Lloyd Wright
Frank Lloyd Wright left behind a rich legacy of beautiful houses and buildings—a truly American style of architecture. He designed over 1,000 structures and 400 of these designs have been built. Considered the most influential architect of his time, Frank Lloyd Wright designed about 1,000 structures, some 400 of which were built. He described his "organic architecture" as one that "proceeds, persists, creates, according to the nature of man and his circumstances as they both change." “I don’t think it’s unfair to say that there is no American architect who has ever lived who has done as much to touch the world, who has done as much to realize his vision of what a perfect architecture might be than Frank Lloyd Wright.”—William Cronon, Historian (Frank Lloyd Wright, 2002) Words like these were often used to describe Wright; such was his influence on the world of architecture. In his own words: "...having a good start, not only do I fully intend to be the greatest architect who has yet lived, but fully intend to be the greatest architect who will ever live. Yes, I intend to be the greatest architect of all time." Born June 8, 1867, he was the son of William C. Wright, a clergyman, and Anna Lloyd
The fires that ravaged the city of Chicago in 1871 gave Wright an unparalleled opportunity to advance his design style, dubbed “geometric manipulation” and in the same year, 1871, he brought out his first design, the Hillside Home, for his maternal aunts, Nell and Jane. He applied the philosophies of unity, truth, harmony and simplicity that were the hallmarks of his mother’s Welsh clan and the Sullivan practice of “form follows function” to great effect; over the next 10 years, he would produce 135 buildings from his burgeoning residential practice. Nevertheless, he maintained a residence with Cheney at the new home he designed upon his return. Called “Taliesin”, a Welsh word meaning “shining brow”. Disaster struck Wright’s life when on August 15, 1914 the house was burned to the ground. A servant burned the house and murdered 7 people, including Mamah Cheney and 2 of her children. That this madman could do such a heinous crime was attributed to a design principal of Wright’s- one door for all purposes. The killer simply stood by the only exit door and killed his victims as they attempted to flee the fire. To pay homage to the woman he considered his one true love, he rebuilt Taliesin on the ashes of the original; this, too, burnt to the ground and when neighbors helped to put out the blaze, the less than honorable among them stole some of his Oriental art works. Women were a two-sided sword for him; married to Catherine Tobin in 1889, he left her to go to Europe with his new mistress, Miriam (Mamah) Cheney, who herself was a married woman. Catherine refused to accept this and did not grant him a divorce in 1923. In summation, Frank Lloyd Wright is important because of his inno
